Runoff and continued warming are perfect bedfellows for a number of aquatic microorganisms which can grow in such numbers that they can displace oxygen in the water, block sunlight from getting to other photosynthetic marine organisms, and produce toxins that kill fish and other organisms.

Florida Governor, Rick Scott, added two counties to the state of emergency list on Thursday over a dangerous bloom of blue-green algae that’s smothering some of Florida’s waterways and beaches.
